Address: Bridgnorth RoadNorton TF11 9EE
Category: 2 Star
Rooms: 10
General Description: The Hundred House Hotel owned by Sylvia and Henry Phillips is one of the finest hotels in Shropshire and is situated in rolling countryside close to the Severn Valley.Recently voted Shropshire Inn of the Year for its mild eccentricity and 2AA rosette, imaginative cuisine. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Ironbridge, Telford or Bridgnorth and 25 minutes from Wolverhampton or Shrewsbury. Eccentric country chic best describes the style of this hotel with patchwork, lavender scented sheets, brass beds, antique furniture and the renowned velvet covered swings! The minute guests push past the front swing doors, with their stained glass panels carrying the words Temperance Hall you realise you have come somewhere special. Downstairs there is an amazing interconnecting warren of lavishly decorated bars and dining rooms with old quarry tiled floors, exposed brickwork, beamed ceilings and oak panelling. Herb posies, pot pourri and lavender bunches all help to perfume the atmosphere in the Hundred House. The hotel has a fascinating history. The oldest part is the 14th century half timbered and thatched courthouse barn in the courtyard of the hotel. This building was used as a courthouse in medieval England. The main building is of Georgian origin and the interior has old quarry tiled floors, exposed brickwork, beamed ceilings and oak panelling. Each and every bedroom is unique in design with half testers, four poster, period furniture and most even have the hotels renowned velvet covered swing! All rooms are en-suite and have every modern day amenity. All bedrooms have an en suite bathroom, colour TV, direct dial telephone, clock and radio alarm, tea and coffee making facility, iron and ironing board plus full central heating. Superior rooms are larger and more sumptuously furnished with period pieces, including some with half-tester beds and some with the famous swings. Stuarts food is widely recognised as being some of the most forward thinking, and delicious in the area. As a food critic said recently it is fresh, local, seasonal and of good provenance. As well as growing a vast and unusual array of herbs in Sylvias Garden, the owners have spent many years building relationships with suppliers of quality meat and vegetables in Shropshires fertile hills. They supply ultra sweet lamb, aged marbled beef, free range Hereford ducks, traditional Gloucester Old Spot Pork, Bobbington Wild Boar, Coxs apple juice, asparagus, summer fruits, pheasant, venison, fish from Brixham etc. which makes dining in the restaurant a wonderful occasion. The worlds first, internationally most famous, and locally largest iron bridge is that which gives its name to the town of Iron Bridge in the south of Telford and is the towns most famous feature. It was built across the River Severn in 1779 by local ironmaster Abraham Darby III to demonstrate the quality of the iron now produced by the process his grandfather invented to smelt iron using coal rather than coke. Immediately, it was world-famous, President Thomas Jefferson of the USA being one of the first to buy an engraving of it!
