General Description: A first-class Hotel, entirely renewed, sited in the town-park of L'Aquila, chief-city of Abruzzo, some 2366 feet high. The most ancient hotel in the town, it was built in 1936 in a fair imperial style. It is situated in the main street of L'Aquila. All the monuments are near by the hotel.The main square is at 200 mt. There you find the Cathedral of S.Massimo. Every day an open market take place there untill 1 p.m. Fruits, craftsman and various goods are on sale.S. Maria di Collemaggio is at only 300 mt. and it is the most famous Abbey in Abruzzo. It was built by Pietro Morrone who was coroned pope there in 1294. The large facade is made of pink and white marble with three great rose windows. The legend says that he had a dream with the Virgin Mary that ordered him to build a basilica on the Collemaggio hillside.On the left hand wall there is the Porta Santa (the holy pardon door) that every year is open for the Perdonanza festivity in August 28th.At the end of the main street is the Sixteenth-century Castle, a Hispanic fortress built to repress audacity of the L’Aquila’s citizens and it is the symbol of the havy Spanish domination.Next to the city wall is the Fountain with 99 spouts built in 1272 by Tancredi of Pentima. According the legend it represents the 99 castle that participated in the foundation of L’Aquila.The Basilica of S. Berardino was built in 1454 in honour of the Saint that died in L’Aquila in 1444. Completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1703 it was reconstructed and decorated in Baroque style. The Hotel lies at a distance by car of an hour from Rome (high-way A24), one hour from the Adriatic Coast and 15 minutes from the rope-rail leading to Campo Imperatore (Gran Sasso of Italy).
