A Bologna
General Description: This friendly bed and breakfast establishment offers comfortable holiday accommodation in the centre of Bologna, Emilia Romagna. Important to Etruscans and Romans alike, and one of the key intellectual centres of mediæval Europe, Bologna boasts a wide range of historical and artistic riches, with much to fascinate the inquisitive traveller. Bologna is still a lively, bustling city, with fast links to the rest of Italy, excellent shops and restaurants, and a busy social and cultural calendar. Bologna is the capital of the Emilia Romagna region, and thanks to its strategic position and fertile surroundings has been an important stronghold for more than two and a half thousand years. It reached the peak of its influence and power in the early middle ages, when its University of 10,000 students was, with Paris, the greatest seat of learning in Europe. Bologna has resisted the ravages of modernisation remarkably well, thanks in part to the pedestrianisation of most of the historical centre. This is a wonderful city of palaces, towers and arches, with a wealth of churches, museums and galleries to visit. The city takes a vast pride in its culinary traditions, and there are some excellent restaurants as well as numerous markets and fairs celebrating local ingredients and recipes. Filled pastas or tortellini, salamis, mortadella and Parmesan cheese are all to the fore, washed down with a draught of the vivacious, semi-sparkling dry red Lambrusco. Bologna owes much of its wealth to its central position and excellent transport links with the rest of Italy. As such it makes an great base for excursions, either by motorway or high-speed train: Florence, Milan and Venice are all within daytripping distance. The city also has an international airport - Guglielmo Marconi - with regular flights to the rest of Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
